Exclusive Interview with Oh Wonder while on tour

Oh Wonder are a London-based alt-pop duo, consisting of Josephine Vander Gucht and Anthony West. We spoke to them while they are on tour to find out more about their music and to allow you readers get to know them better! Read on to find out more about their song writing process and hidden talents that they might have!

1. Could you give us an introduction to your music?

We are Oh Wonder, a songwriting duo from London, UK. We write alt-pop songs that are infused with soft electro beats, and unison vocals.

2. When writing songs, do you wait for any specific feelings or simply have a writing session? Tell me more about your songwriting process!

It’s a wonderful process, and one that we’re sorely missing whilst touring so much at the moment! We generally inhabit other worlds when we write, so we think up scenarios and build stories to create an outside perspective as songwriters. It’s a really fun way of writing, and we have never lacked inspiration because we can always step into these daydreams, without having to draw from real life.

3. Can you tell me if there is anyone or anything that inspires you to do music which brings you to where you are today ?

We both have our parents to thank for helping us get to where we are today. They have allowed us the chance to lead creative lives, even when we were younger and the path ahead of us was more uncertain. We have both been playing music since a very young age, so the support of all our friends and family has been essential for us to get to where we are today. And of course, our amazing managers!

4. What are some of the challenges you guys face so far while doing music?

As an artist there is a constant attack on your integrity within this industry. Once you have a good thing going, more and more people want to get involved, and sometimes try to take advantage of the position that you’re in. Thankfully we have a wonderful team around us who really care about our future, and we’ve answered ‘no’ to more opportunities than we’ve taken. Saying no is actually one of the hardest things to do!

5. Having the popularity you gained recently through YouTube, how different is your life now, compared to the past?

The only real noticeable shift for us is that we’re at home a lot less. We spent 2014-2015 writing and recording an album at home, so we’d see our friends and family a lot and lead quite a ‘normal’ social life. However now we are on the road 90% of the time, so there has been a big shift in our daily routine. Touring obviously has incredible perks and we’re fortunate to play to full rooms around the world, but we’re having to put a lot more effort into keeping our relationships back home. We also miss making ourselves breakfast.

6. You guys are currently touring UK and Europe. How was the experience like and was there anything funny/weird stories to share?

The UK and European tour was incredible and there were some really special evenings that we shared with our audience. London’s Kentish Town Forum hosted the the last show of the tour, and it was a really special moment when we got off stage and realised that we’d just played a very iconic London venue that we had been spectators at many times in the past. After the show we were able to celebrate with all our friends and family, who we hadn’t seen for some months. It was a beautiful end to an amazing tour!

7. What fuels your passion for music?

Each other. We both strive to be better at our role within Oh Wonder and our entire role within music, so we are constantly pushing each other to become better writers and musicians. We draw real inspiration from the passion that we both have for our art.

8. What are your plans for the future?

We are touring an incredible amount for the rest of the year, which is super exciting. Hopefully we’ll make it out to Singapore! We’re also in the middle of a month in Brooklyn, New York. We’re writing the second album and relishing every second out here! Hopefully we’ll get to share the songs soon…

9. Do any of you have any hidden talents most people do not know?

Josephine is a whizz on the needles and is constantly knitting whilst on the road. Anthony has a talent of waking up early and finding the best coffee shop that each city has to offer – it’s an art!
