Rocking it out with Against The Current
You might remember the pop-rock trio’s previous visit to Singapore just last year while on tour with Alex Goot. That’s right, Against the Current was back in Singapore for their Gravity World Tour and rocked out with a group of adoring fans on the 31st August 2015, at the SCAPE Underground.
Opening for Against the Current was Sign of Five. The energetic bunch absolutely riled up the crowd with their original songs such as “Do What You Want to Me” and a refreshing rendition of Bruno Mar’s “Just the Way You Are.” Their passion and earnest disposition swept the crowd off their feet (literally). Call them the kings of charisma as not only did Sign of Five manage to get the crowd jumping, but also shared an intimate moment with them. Each and everyone in the crowd complied to the band’s request to put their lighted phones up and swayed to the beat, as the band sung every word and strummed every chord of “Closer to the Sun”- the first song the band had ever written together, with such passion, emotion and love for music.
By the end of their set, one could see that they were truly happy to be on stage and warmed up the crowd with their infectious personalities and catchy tunes. They even got the crowd chanting “ATC!” with much enthusiasm, as if begging for Against the Current to make their grand entrance.
Against the Current then took the stage by storm with “Talk”. The crowd roared with excitement and sang along as lead singer, Chrissy Costanza, worked the stage.
Chrissy greeted the crowd with a resounding “Hello Singapore!” and mentioned that they were really excited to be back. True enough, their excitement showed in the next few songs. Against the Current performed “Infinity” and “Dreaming Alone”, as well as their cover of “Since You’ve Been Gone” by Kelly Clarkson, which only resulted in louder cheers from the audience as they jumped and rocked out along with the band. The fans was treated to a sneak peak of a track from their upcoming album, titled, “Outsiders”.
Who knew that the petite lead singer could boast such stage presence? All eyes were on Chrissy as she engaged in casual banter with the crowd and even showed her quirky side by revealing her strong dislike for grapes with seeds in them.
In-between songs, the band also shared some banter within themselves, showing that they were more than comfortable being around each other. Chrissy also showed her interest in Singapore culture, asking the crowd how to use slangs such as “lah”. The band performed other songs such as “Gravity” and “Comeback Kid”, before wrapping up the show with “Fireproof”, which only left the crowd aching for more. For encore, they performed crowd favourite which includes “Brighter”, to “Another You (Another Way)” from their Infinity EP.
It was a tough farewell for both the band and the crowd but Chrissy delivered a sincere promise that the band would back again soon, and hoped that the crowd would wait for their return. The newest member of the record label, Fueled by Ramen, one can expect nothing short of amazing from Against the Current.
